Where We Are

Our Ministries

‘I am confident that the great God will direct you to what is most to His glory.’ Nano Nagle

When the Sisters first came to New Zealand they were mostly involved in teaching in the schools both Primary and Secondary. Some however taught music, speech and singing. As the Catholic Schools became integrated with the State System and the teachers were treated on the same basis as State Schools in terms of pay and conditions, and the numbers of Sisters reduced, the Sisters listened to where God was calling to respond to the needs of the day.

As with Nano, the focus has always been to be among the people, at the same time always listening deeply to what is being asked at this time. We continue to hold the flame against the wind as we endeavour to find new ways of responding to the needs of our day. In our ministries of schooling, pastoral work, spiritual direction, prison chaplaincy, adult education, outreach to disadvantaged youth and care of the elderly we are conscious of those who are made poor through unjust structures. We work in close collaboration with our associates and people with whom we live and work to foster awareness and action towards sustainable living and care for the earth.

As we venture into a new community in South Otago we are working to ensure that those no longer able to be active in an outgoing ministry are involved to the level of their ability in supportive ways.
